Öğe Acknowledged statistical help and a better use of p values: a proposal(NLM (Medline), 2019) Dincses E.; Guzelant G.; Hatemi G.; Sut N.; Yazici H.OBJECTIVES: The p-value is commonly misused. We hypothesised that a close cooperation with a statistician would go along with a more proper use of p-values. We considered a close cooperation present, when a statistician was a coauthor, or a formal statistical help was acknowledged in a study report. METHODS: Randomised controlled trials published in 2015-16 in 4 widely read rheumatology journals were searched for a close cooperation with a statistician, the inclusion of effect sizes, confidence intervals, exact rather than relative p-values and the omission of p-values in tables depicting trial entry data. RESULTS: There were only 28/133 (21%) articles in which a formal statistical help was acknowledged (Group I). The rest (Group II) gave no acknowledgement of a close cooperation. Reporting of effect sizes (96% vs. 71%) and exact p-values (88% vs. 69%) were more in Group I (p=0.01, and p=0.08, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: While a formal acknowledgement of a close cooperation was notably infrequent at 21%, this went along with improvement in some aspects of p-value reporting. If substantiated by further studies, we propose that a formally acknowledged statistical help should improve p-value reporting. Like all professionals, statisticians would like their name/office to be formally associated with their good work.Öğe Comparison of human amniotic membrane and hyaluronate/ carboxymethylcellulose membrane for prevention of adhesion formation in rats(2007) Kelekci S.; Uygur D.; Yilmaz B.; Sut N.; Yesildaglar N.Objectives: To investigate the effectiveness of human amniotic membrane (HAM) in the prevention of postoperative adhesion formation and to compare it with the efficacy of hyaluronate/carboxymethylcellulose (HA/CMC) membrane in a rat model. Methods: Following pilot studies and computer-generated randomization, 23 female Wistar albino rats were operated on in the full study. One of the uterine horns with standard lesions was treated with either HAM (n = 13) or HA/CMC (n = 10) and the other uterine horn served as the control. Second look laparotomies were performed 2 weeks after the operations. Main outcome measures were extent, severity, degree, total adhesion scores and histopathologic characteristics of adhesions. Results: Uterine horns treated with HAM had significantly lower total adhesion scores than the controls (5.15 ± 2.67 vs. 7.92 ± 1.50, P < 0.05). Total adhesion scores of uterine horns treated with HA/CMC membrane were significantly lower than those of the controls (4.30 ± 1.95 vs. 7.50 ± 1.84, P < 0.01). There were no significant differences between the HAM and HA/CMC groups regarding any adhesion scores. Conclusions: HAM and HA/CMC membrane are both effective for prevention of adhesion formation in a rat uterine horn model; however, one does not seem to be more effective than the other. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.Öğe Compliance of abstracts of randomized control trials with CONSORT guidelines: A case study of Balkan journals(Pensoft Publishers, 2022) Sut N.; Kocak Z.; Korkmaz S.; Uzun C.Background: Published reports of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are not compliant with the CONSORT checklist as much as they should. Objective: To assess the quality, in terms of the level to which they are compliant with the CONSORT checklist, of abstracts of RCTs published in general medical journals in the Balkan region. Methods: Two observers assessed the abstracts of RCTs published in five general medical journals of the Balkan region between 2012 and 2018 to determine the level to which the abstracts were compliant with the 16-item CONSORT abstracts checklist. Results: Of the 183 studies that were identified for evaluation, 124 (67.8%) were excluded from the evaluation. The average compliance level was 44.5% (95% CI: 41.9%–47.1%), the lowest being that for randomization (1.7%), funding (1.7%), numbers analysed (11.0%), blinding (13.6%), and trial registration (18.6%). However, the compliance level was very high for conclusions (99.2%), objectives (96.6%), interventions (95.8%), and primary outcomes (83.9%). The length of the abstract (word count) and the level of compliance were positively correlated (rs = 0.43; p = 0.001). Abstracts of trials published in journals that endorse CONSORT in their publication policies were more compliant than those published in other journals (47.5 ± 10.4 versus 40.8 ± 8.0, p = 0.024). Conclusion: The overall level of compliance with the CONSORT checklist was below 50%. To improve the quality of abstracts of RCTs, authors should be encouraged to use the CONSORT checklist, and editors should check compliance with the CONSORT guidelines as part the publishing workflow. © 2022, Pensoft Publishers. Methods: We evaluated the outcome of 30 patients that made up the placebo arm of a 6 months controlled trial of thalidomide and looked at the relation between the frequencies of mucocutaneous manifestations during the trial and the development of major organ involvement necessitating immunosuppressives during the post-trial period. Results: Fifteen (50%) patients had received immunosuppresives for major organ involvement during the post-trial period. Patients receiving immunosuppressive treatment were significantly younger at the onset of BS compared to those who did not (24.5±5 vs. 29.7±3.8 SD years; p=0.003). The mean number of oral ulcers recorded throughout the trial was significantly higher among patients using immunosuppressives compared to those who did not (2.09±0.96 vs. 1.43±0.8; p=0.029). This significance disappeared when adjusted for age of onset of BS (p=0.16). ROC curve analysis showed that having 10 or more ulcers during 6 months has a sensitivity of 86.7% and a specificity of 53% for the subsequent necessity of immunosuppressive use. The same association was not true for genital ulcers, follicular lesions and erythema nodosum. Conclusion: These findings on a limited number of patients suggest that frequent occurrence of oral ulceration during the initial years of the disease may predict the development of major organ involvement in men with BS. © Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology 2012.Öğe The morphometric analysis of crista phallica in identification of sexes(Universidad de la Frontera, 2009) Ulucam E.; Alicioglu B.; Cikmaz S.; Yilmaz A.; Sut N.Crista phallica (CP) is used to determine sex in anthropology and criminal forensic medicine; however, it does not exist in anatomic and radiological terminology. The purpose of this retrospective study is morphometric analysis of the CP. We studied radiographs displaying several different clinical indications from patients whose bone maturation were fully complete. The crista phallica located on both sides of the medial portion of ischiopubic ramus (IPR) were localized and their peak points were determined. The distance from these peak points to the inner cortex of IPRs were measured, as well as the angles between the tangents passing the peak points from both sides. We determined the distance of the IPR (DIPR) for males and females sequentially as 21.3±3.5 mm, and 17±2.8 mm, angle of CP (ACP) as 149.1°±15.7, and 163.5°±13.4. It was identified that ACP for females is less than ACP for males (p<0.001). ACP and DIPR alone are not sufficient criteria to determine sex. Therefore, the results of our findings show that it would be more useful to study other specifications and their metric analysis in order to determine sex.Öğe Pulmonary artery aneurysms in Behçet's syndrome: A review of the literature with emphasis on geographical differences(Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology S.A.S., 2015) Celik S.; Yazici Y.; Sut N.; Yazici H.Objective. To investigate the frequency of Behçet's syndrome (BS) with pulmonary artery aneurysms (PAA) publications, the most lethal complication of BS, as reported from different countries and to provide a review of diagnostic techniques, treatment approaches and prognosis. Methods. Countries from each continent with a population of 4 million and over were chosen (n=128). A PubMed search for "BS, PAA and the country name" was conducted and 23 countries with BS and PAA were identified. The full texts of articles (n=91) were analysed for data including gender, age, accompanying vascular findings, diagnostic techniques, treatment modalities and mortality rates. Results. A total of 207 (183 males, 24 females) patients with BS and PAA were reported in 91 articles originating from 23 countries. As expected there was a significant correlation (r=0.88, p < 0.001) between the total number of articles about BS (n=4431) and those related to PAA and BS. In a simple linear regression analysis the number of BS and PAA articles from Japan was significantly below the identity line while in Turkey there was a propensity to publish more articles related to PAA than expected. One hundred and sixteen patients (56%) were treated with immunosuppressive therapy. Biologics were used only in 5 patients (2%). Of the 207 patients, 62 (30%) died. Conclusion. PAA is mostly reported as case reports from countries where BS is common. PAA might be uncommon in Japan. The prognosis of PAA could be getting better. © Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology 2015.Öğe Randomized comparison of second trimester pregnancy termination utilizing saline moistened or dry misoprostol(2007) Yilmaz B.; Kelekci S.; Ertas I.E.; Ozel M.; Sut N.; Mollamahmutoglu L.; Danisman N.Objective: The aim of this randomized prospective study was to compare efficacy and side effects of saline moistened misoprostol with dry misoprostol, administered 800 ?g intravaginally every 6 h up to a maximum of 3 doses in 24 h for second trimester pregnancy termination. Materials and methods: A total of 81 women seeking termination of second trimester pregnancy (55 fetal death, 17 fetal structural anomaly, 5 chromosomal abnormality, 4 other reasons) were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: (1) intravaginal non-moistened (dry) misoprostol in group A (n = 40) or (2) misoprostol moistened with 3 ml of saline in group B (n = 41). Results: All of the patients in either group aborted within 48 h (100% success rate). Delivery was achieved in a median (interquartile range) of 13 (40) h with the group A protocol and 12 (36) h with the group B protocol (P = 0.652). Delivery with first dose, delivery within 12 h and delivery within 24 h were similar (P > 0.05) in group B (34.1, 87.5 and 60%, respectively) and group A (25, 82.9, 46.3, respectively). Both treatment regimens were tolerable and with similar side effects. Conclusion: Misoprostol moistened with saline was not more effective than dry misoprostol for second trimester pregnancy termination. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.Öğe Synovial cysts of the lumbar facet joints: a retrospective magnetic resonance imaging study investigating their relation with degenerative spondylolisthesis.(2009) Alicioglu B.; Sut N.Patients with synovial cysts of the facet joints were compared with patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS), based on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of their spondyloses. The lumbar MRI of 30 patients with DS (group 1) 24 patients with synovial cysts of the facet joints (group 2) were studied. All patients were evaluated in terms of facet joint arthritis, disc degeneration, facet joint effusion, and the thickness of the flaval ligament. 54.1% of the patients with synovial cysts had associated DS. The mean grade of disc degeneration (2.43+/-0.50 and 2.13+/-0.68 in groups 1 and 2, respectively) and the mean thickness of the flaval ligament (3.20+/-1.22 mm and 3.83+/-1.46 mm in groups 1 and 2, respectively) did not differ between the groups (p=0.093 and p=0.097). The mean grade of facet joint osteoarthritis (2.53+/-0.51 and 2.08+/-0.72 in groups 1 and 2, respectively) was significantly higher in group 1 (p=0.18). The co-existance of synovial effusion was significantly higher in cases with synovial cysts. (p=0.008). Synovial cysts are associated with DS and facet joint osteoarthritis. The presence of synovial effusion and the high degree of disc degeneration are prominent features in patients with synovial cysts. Although osteoarthritis and DS are highly concomitant with facet joint synovial cysts, both conditions do not invariably lead to a cyst formation.
