Özet
The effects of ketotifen as a mast cell stabilizer on adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats were investigated. Adjuvant arthritis (AA) is widely used to evaluate the antiarthritic drugs since this disease have many similarities to rheumatoid arthritis in humans. The mast cells increase in the histopathological picture of joints in both these diseases. We comparatively examined the effects of ketotifen that stabilizes mast cells and astemizol that is an antagonist of histamine H1 receptors to investigate the role of the mast cells on development of these diseases. The therapy with ketotifen (0.05 mg/kg/day) is continued for two weeks and it suppressed the developing of the secondary lesions of the disease, however, the effects of ketotifen depend on much more stabilization of mast cells than its H1-antihistaminic effects and that the mast cells stabilizators may have benefit on the therapy of rheumatic patients.
