In this study, it is aimed to reveal whether the habit of teacher candidates' using mobile phones and the internet has a negative effect on writing Turkish texts. In accordance with this purpose, the data collected via surveys from 405 teacher candidates, it was determined that students preferred mobile phone short text messages in written communication rather than chat and e-mail. Students stated that they used Turkish word abbreviations in chat, e-mail and short mobile phone texts. They also expressed some justifications as a result that using abbreviations is time saving, even though they do not write the entire word, the reader will understand what is written and they also think that writing entire word is more difficult. According to the data gained from the same survey, the majority of the students do not use a word or word abbreviation from another language in electronic media correspondence. The rate of male students using spelling and obeying punctuation rules is higher than the rate of female students while writing e-mail. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
