V SUMMARY In this research, the Topraksu maps at the scale of 1:100.000 which prepared according to the American Soil Classification system (1938), were surveyed to the maps which are selected areas and converted to the maps which are used as mapping unit of great groups of Soil Taxonomy (1975). According to the results 8 suborders and their 11 great groups were defined relating to Entisol, Inceptisol, Alfisol, Mollisol and Vertisol orders in Soil Taxonomy. In addition, the researched soils were seperated as 15 soil units according to the Fao/Unesco system. In the great group category, the largest spread was for Haploxeralfs with 110.360 hectares and 42.51 per cent share. It was followed by Haploxererts (25.40 per cent) and Xerorthens (13.20 per cent) respectively. The smallest spread with 500 hectares and 0.2 per cent share was detected for Haploxerolls. In addition, such aspects as the physical and chemical properties of these soils were explained. It is believed that it will be possible to apply the present research findings to the soils of Thrace and Marmara regions as well as to the soils of those having xeric soil moisture regime and thermic soil temperature regimes Key Words: Soil, Thrace Region (Edirne), Soil Taxonomy, Fao/Unesco, Great Group, Topraksu Map
