As of 1516, Orthodox men of religion called vladika who were appointed by election, started to govern Montenegro. This situation continued until I. Danilo Petrovic was chosen as vladika in 1697. I. Danilo Petrovic left the reign to his relatives and established a dynasty thereby starting the rulership of Petrovic Family who governed Montenegro until 1918.
