Bu merkezi konumdaki rolünü, Hitit öncesi dönemlerde Çatal Höyük, Kültepe gibi önemli yerleşmelerle çok iyi üstlenmiştir. Hitit Konutları adlı çalışmada, Erken Tunç Çağı'ndan (M.Ö. 3. Binyıl başı) Hitit Dönemi'nin sonuna kadar (M.Ö. 1190), İç Anadolu'da dönemin sosyal yapısına ayna tutan, konut yapıları incelenmiştir. Ele alınan konutlar, basit plandan karmaşık plana doğru tipolojilendirilmiş, dönemler arası sürekliliğin olup olmadığı anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Ortaya konan araştırma sonucunda; konutlarda kentler arası benzerliğin olduğu kadar bazı farklılıklarında yaşandığı anlaşılmıştır. Mimari teknolojisi geliştikçe konutlarda da gelişmeler yaşandığı gözlemlenmiştir. Her dönemde konutlarda özellikle iç mimaride, yeni gelişmeler yaşandığı ortaya çıkartılan bazı konut örneklerinden anlaşılmaktadır. Nüfusla konut yapılaşması arasında sıkı bir bağın olduğu, Hititlerin Yakındoğu'da önemli bir güç konumuna gelmesiyle yaşanan nüfus artışından anlaşılmıştır.
