Özet

During the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, Bosnia was conquered and became part of the Rumelia Province. Subsequently, in 1580, the Bosnian Province was established as a frontier region of the Ottoman Empire in central Europe. By the early 17th century, the borders of the province extended beyond the Drava river to the north, the Adriatic Sea to the south (with the exception of some Dalmatian cities), the Drina to the east, the Ibar river to the southeast, and Lika to the west. However, the Treaty of Karlowitz, signed after the war of 1683-1699, resulted in significant border changes, and the Bosnian Province was reconfigured to consist of four sanjaks: Bosnia, Herzegovina, Klis and Izvornik Bihke, with the Sava River in the north, the Una River in the west, Bosnia and Dalmatia in the south, and Yenipazar sanjak in the east. Due to the presence of neighbouring states such as the Habsburg and Venice, the Bosnian Province was home to a significant number of castles. Following the Belgrade Agreement in 1739, the Ottoman Empire entered a long period of peace on its western border, and remained relatively free from political conflicts of Europe. However, the tension between the Ottoman and Russian empires increased after 1760, and war broke out in 1768. During this period, the uncertain situation of the Habsburg State continued. The Ottoman Empire, which always attached importance to castle repairs on the border, accelerated castle repairs throughout the state in order to be prepared for a new war that might break out. In this study, using Ottoman archive documents, the repairs carried out in the castles within the Bosnian and Izvornik sanjaks between 1760 and 1775 in order to increase and reinforce the security of the Bosnian border will be included. © 2024, Abidin Temizer.
