Özet
What is the importance of knowing the history of economics, accounting, management, audit, tax, and finance? What good is it for us to spend time on the past instead of studying the future and predicting the future? If you work as an academic or a practitioner in the fields I mentioned above, you have asked yourself these questions. The answer to this is many, but most importantly, if you want to analyze the decisions taken in different countries in the business world in these areas, it is useful to have historical knowledge on this subject. In the decisions taken by countries in different situations, genetic codes will come into play and will carry traces of the past. New generations will want to take new steps in their business decisions taken in the past. They will brag about the decisions their ancestors made, or they will discuss the problems they experienced because of their ancestors’ decisions. They will try to correct the wrong decisions made in the past. Some countries, on the other hand, as they examine their history, realize that their ancestors made much more advanced discoveries long before the practices in the world. This is the best benefit of knowing history. My professor Prof. Oktay Güvemli at Business School in Marmara University has taught us accounting history and later we had found an opportunity to organize the 12th World Congress of Accounting History in Istanbul under his presidency. Many years later, he asked me to organize Accounting and Management History Conferences. I am very lucky that I had an opportunity to organize the 1st Balkan Accounting and Management History Congress under his supervision: Other organizers were Mount Allison University (Canada), University of National World and Economy (UNWE), International Hellenic University (Greece), Public Oversight Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority at Turkey, and Chamber of Sworn-in Certified Public Accountants of Istanbul on November 20–22, 2019, at Balkan Congress Center in Trakya University Edirne Turkiye. In this chapter, as a starting of the history sub-series, I would introduce Prof. Oktay Guvemli, President of the 12th World Congress of Accounting Historians in Istanbul, 2008 and Founder of the Association of Accounting and Finance Academicians of Turkey (MUFAD). © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2023.
