Abstract
The control of point sources discharges and complex mixtures is an important component of protecting receiving water quality. In Turkey, to control complex discharges technology-based effluent limits are used. These limits are determined by considering only treatment technology and economy, while the quality of receiving water or carrying capacity of the ecosystem have not received much importance. In this study all of the effects and drawbacks of this method are discussed. The approaches used in the world and in Turkey are compared and the necessity of using discharge standards based on receiving water quality instead of present discharge standards is emphasised.
