Özet
This chapter touches on the significance and challenges of culture in foreign language learning and teaching environments. Since culture has become an increasingly important component of foreign language teaching in recent times, discussion of some cultural issues in education is the core of this chapter. In common sense, learning cultural components of the target language is thought to be a pathway to communicate efficiently in the target language. In addition to providing access into communicative competency, learning culture helps language learners relate the abstract forms of a language to real people and places. Culture teaching may offer learners some opportunities to learn about their own cultural norms by comparing their own native culture with the target language culture. However, some challenges may come about while learning these cultural components. In culture teaching, learners may disrupt their own world view and self-identity as well as ways of acting, thinking and evaluating. As every culture has its own cultural norms and these norms differ from one culture to another, some of the norms can be completely dissimilar and conflicting with other cultural norms. While dealing with such dissimilar norms, some problems may arise among learners who do not know or share the norms of the other culture. It may also force learners to develop prejudices about otherness. In this chapter, some suggestions are recommended to overcome the potential problems and to boost intercultural competence. © 2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
