Özet
16. yüzyıl sonunda başlayıp neredeyse 18. yüzyıla kadar devam eden süre aralığında Avrupa sanatına hakim olan Barok üslup, Avrupa'nın büyük bir bölümü ile Latin Amerika'da yayılmıştır. Resimlerde portreler, natürmortlar, mitoloji, günlük yaşamdan alınan sahneler ve dini konular işlenmiş, manzaralara önem verilmiştir. 17. yüzyıl boyunca Hollanda'nın farklı kentlerinde ortaya çıkan sanat merkezleri olsa da bunlar birbirine yakın olduğu için sanatçılar kolaylıkla ulaşım sağlıyordu. Kentlere göre bir üslup ve ekol ayrımı yapılması zordur. Bu yüzden Hollandalı sanatçılar seçtikleri temalara göre gruplandırılırlar. Bu sanatçılar arasından Rembrandt, hayatı boyunca bilinen 50 tablo, 32 gravür, yedi karakalem olmak üzere 99 adet otoportresini yapmıştır. Hollanda sanatında önemli bir yere sahip olan portre, sanatçıların çok fazla sipariş aldığı bir türdür. Rembrandt'da sürekli kendi portrelerini yaparak kendini geliştirmeyi amaçlamıştır. Bir süre sonra bu düşünce yerini duyguları ifade edebilme becerisine dönüşmüştür. Kendisini model olarak kullanıp, çeşitli teknikler ve çizim çalışmaları ile korku, endişe, melankoli gibi duyguları yüz ifadelerine yansıtmayı başarmıştır. Farklı ifadeleri yakalamak için tiyatro kostümleri giyip zarif şapkalar takmıştır. Yakın odak portreleri ile figürlerde duygunun daha önemli olduğunu kendinden sonra gelen tüm ressamlara armağan etmiştir.
