dc.description.abstractThe performance in laying hens is influenced by an annual decrease of rate of genetic progress. Breeders of laying hens are forced to use improved statistical methods and models to be competitive. One obstacle of statistical analysis of egg production data is its strong deviation from the normal distribution. Data from three generations of two brown pure-bred lines of a commercial breeding programme were analysed. Test period was in a range of week 20 to week 60 (ENT). Egg numbers were accumulated from week 20 to 24 (EN24), from week 25 to 32 (EN32), from week 33 to 44 (EN44) and from week 45 to 60 (EN60). Results can be summarized as follows: Using Box-Cox-transformation distribution of laying traits approaches normality. Higher heritabilities were estimated with transformed versus untransformed data. Despite of high correlation between breeding values of transformed and untransformed data (r(tu) = 0.75-0.96) large differences were found in adjusted phenotypic laying performance of the best 10%, 30% and 50% hens. Hens, ranked by breeding values based on transformed data, had significantly higher performance.en_US
