Toplumun her kesiminde hizmet edecek bireylerin yetiştirilmesinde görev alan akademisyenlerin obezite önyargısı hakkında farkındalık kazanmaları önemli görülmektedir.
This descriptive study aimed to determine academicians’ prejudicial attitudes and behaviors toward individuals with obesity. In this study, we investigate the relationship between empathy skills, empathy tendencies, and obesity prejudice levels of academicians. The survey was carried out on 230 academicians who worked at Karabuk University between October 2021 and February 2022 and agreed to participate in the study voluntarily. In our study, 4 data collection tools were used. These tools are; a questionnaire form prepared by the researcher, Empath Skill Scale (ESS), Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS), and GAMS 27Obesity Prejudice Scale (OPS). Study data were analyzed with appropriate statistical methods using the SPSS 22.0 package program. The academicians' average scores were 82.35 for OPS, 72.12 for ETS, and 135.36 for ESS. It was observed that female academicians had a higher mean score of ETS than males (p<0.05). According to the obesity prejudice statements, It was determined that the majority of those who expressed they were unbiased were biased. Also, it found that most of those who said that they had no opinion was biased. It was observed that the highest mean score of OPS was in the group, declaring that they were biased (p<0.05). When the academics' body perceptions and BMI categories were examined, a statistically significant relationship was found (p<0.05). It was seen that most of those who were normal according to the BMI classification perceived themselves as underweight, and a significant part of those who were overweight according to the BMI classification perceived themselves as normal. Also, it was determined that most of those whose BMI was in the obese class perceived themselves as overweight and obese. There was no significant relationship between the mean scores of OPS and ETS according to the fields of science of the academicians (p>0.05). It was determined that the average score of ESS of the academicians according to their fields of science was found to be highest in health sciences and lowest in social sciences (p<0.05). It is crucial for academicians to gain awareness about obesity bias, as they are responsible for raising people who will serve in all parts of society.
