S: To investigate the efficacy of colposcopy and Pap smear in the evaluation of cervical lesions. STUDY DESING: We have included 306 patients, aged between 18 and 72 years, who had attended to our department between 4.1.2002 and 15.4.2002. Colposcopy and Pap smear test were both used for the evaluation of cervix. We have performed cervical punch biopsy to patients with abnormal colposcopy results or cervical lesions on colposcopy and to women with "Pap 3" cervical smear results. Oxytocin and methylergobasine maleat were applied for a better view of the "transformation zone" on the cervix, during colposcopic examination. RESULTS: In our cohort of 306 women, 192 patients (63%) were infertile ages and 114 (37%) were in the postmenopausal period. Seven women were found to have CIN 1 lesions after cervical biopsy and 6 out of these 7 women had biopsies because of abnormal colposcopic findings. Pap smear tests revealed Pap 1 in 44 patients (14%), Pap 2 in 257 patients (84%) and Pap 3 in 5 patients (2%). Cervical punch biopsies determined "chronic cervicitis" in these 5 patients with "Pap 3" results. The pathologic results of these biopsies were chronic inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Colposcopy seems as a better method for determining CIN compared to Pap smear test. However, using both colposcopy and Pap smear can exhibit better results in recognizing CIN. Besides, oxytocin and methylergobasine maleat are good opportunities for a better evaluation of the transformation zone.en_US
