Özet
Since 1980s, translation has been studied as a linguistic act constructed within societies and cultures, which in turn constructs them. Being interrelated with cultures, gender issue has also become an essential part of translation studies. According to feminist theory, masculine domination has penetrated into and maintained through language. In this respect, translation of feminist writing will be the subject of this study and Buket Uzuner's ecofeminist novel titled Uyumsuz Defne Kaman'in Maceralari. TOPRAK and its translation into English as The Adventures of Misfit Defne Kaman. EARTH will be examined. Ecofeminism has been developed against all kinds of domination based on binary oppositions like man/woman and human/nature, where the first is the powerful putting pressure on the other. In this novel there is a call for an ecofeminist reading. This call is also considered to be an invitation for the translator, who is supposed to be a model reader creating meaning in cooperation with the text. To what extent the translator cooperates with the text will be examined by performing a translation analysis with the guidance of Antoine Berman's (2012) deforming tendencies. The analysis will be made on the basis of ecofeminist features conveyed in the source text and the tendencies will be explained in terms of foreignization and domestication strategies (Venuti 1995) used in translation. It is aimed to display whether these tendencies lead to a fluent translated text in the target language at the expense of removal of the characteristic features revealed in an ecofeminist writing. Considering the interdisciplinary feature of translation studies, this study aims to contribute to both translation studies and gender studies.
