Aim: To investigate the perception of Turkish pediatric surgeons on the studies of conservation and improvement of Turkish language under the protection of the Turkish Association of Pediatric Surgeons (TAPS) and their professional opinion about Turkish language. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study. The constructed questionnaire, designed by the members of the Language Committee of the TAPS (LCTAPS), was distributed among 250 Turkish pediatric surgeons in the annual meeting which was held in Gaziantep in 2005. The obtained data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and X 2 test. Results: In the study, 72.4 % of the questionnaires were returned. The participants were 79.1 % male and 20.9 % female. The rate of Turkish pediatric surgeons who had communication difficulty with their patients due to abundance of the foreign originated terms was 66.5 %. It was found that the participants supported to constitute a "language section" in the official journal of TAPS (72.9 %), to find Turkish terms instead of the foreign originated (83.1 %) and to write a Turkish pediatric surgery terms dictionary (86.5 %). There was statistically significant difference between professors (86.4 %) and assistant professors (% 68.4) who supported the study of using correct and good Turkish language. It was found a statistically significant difference between pediatric surgery fellows (76.7 %) and university lecturers (28.1 %) who thought as "I could better perform my job if there were more Turkish literature". Conclusion: Turkish pediatric surgeons are quite sensible on the effective usage of Turkish language. This sensibility is parallel to age and title. There is inadequate Turkish literature in pediatric surgery in our country and it has negative effects on our colleagues. The members of TAPS mostly support the efforts on speaking and writing the same language and studies of LCTAPS on Turkish language.en_US
