Özet
This article examines the role of the publication of the newspaperHak ve Özgürlük – (Rights and Freedom), which was published betweenthe years of 1991 and 1998 in Turkish as an official media organ of thepolitical party The Movement for Rights and Freedoms – MRF, in theconstruction of Turkish Identity in Bulgaria after the collapse ofCommunist Regime. After the dissolution of the Ottoman EmpireBulgaria has become the country where the biggest number of Turks livein Balkans. Bulgarians after founding their national state has facedseveral regime changes that effect its population and their identity deeply.Turks, having directly been affected by these changes, have spent avigorous effort to construct their identity as a national minority inBulgaria. The Communist Regime’s policy change towards Turkishcommunity starting from 1971 resulted in name changing campaign of1984-1985 and finally the great exodus of 1989. After the fall of Zhivkovthe process of democratic transition started in Bulgaria and Turkishminority took its position in this practice. Throughout this process anewspaper published by the political party MRF, which is known as theTurkish political party in Bulgaria, has supplied content to promoteTurkish identity. The issues of the newspaper published between theyears of 1991 – 1995 has been received in the archives of the TurkishNational Library in Turkey. In order to find out the effect of thenewspaper’s publication, the content has been analysed in a detailedway. Therefore, the study is conducted by using document analysistechnique to analyse the content. As a result of this analysis it has beenreached that the newspaper content has played significant role inshaping Turkish identity in Bulgaria after the collapse of CommunistRegime.
