Özet

In this study the aesthetic value of slow zeybeks, one of the authentic musical form of Anatolia, is discussed through Kantian mathemathical sublime. For this purpose, firstly, the historical background of sublime is outlined and the importance of Kant’s position in this issue is revealed both by its historical and contemporary aspects. Secondly, some functions of imagination in the Critique of Pure Reason are ascertained in its detail. Depending on this, mathematical sublime is analyzed through imagination in the Critique of The Power of Judgment. Due to its importance for our study, status of music in Kant’s philosophy is ascertained, so the question whether it is legitimate to speak on music on the basis of Kant’s views is answered considering his negative attitude towards music and indecisive statements about the issue. Then, characteristic musical features of slow zeybeks are elaborated, and based upon this background, the question of how to evaluate folk songs belonging to this genre through mathematical sublime is answered. As a result, it is revealed that the aesthetic value of slow zeybeks, one of the authentic musical form of Anatolia, can be evaluated in the context of the sublime, and that slow zeybeks constitute an excellent example of the mathematical sublime as defined by Kant.
