The Ramsar Convention is an international agreement which was named of the city Ramsar, Iran, where the meeting has been held in 1971. It has been a basic constitution for international cooperation on protecting the wetlands. Protection of ecological values of wetlands, especially to protect the biodiversity of flora and fauna, is the main purpose of the Convention. Turkey has been involved to this convention in 1994 with the Goksu delta, the Manyas lake, Sultan Sazligi, the lake Burdur and the lake Seyfe. The Kizilirmak delta, the lake Ulubat, the Gediz delta and the Akyatan lagoon have been involved at the same time in 1998 with the Kus and Burdur lakes which were partially involved before. The lands of Turkey are located where three continents meet which constitutes diversity in habitats due to the geographic location, topography and different climatic conditions. Wetlands which contribute to this diversity by providing reproduction, nourishment and sheltering media for living beings are internationally significant. In this respect, not only several wetlands all around the world are being protected by this international tool, the Ramsar Convention, but also the sustainability of the wetlands is managed as well. Only 9 of 25 wetlands of Turkey are involved to the Ramsar list. Within this paper the criteria of determinig a wetland as 'Ramsar area' has been studied and some of the wetlands of Turkey have been evaluated with regards to the criteria of the Ramsar Convention.en_US
