Abstract
It is known that the proverbs can be used unchanged for centuries, because of their cliche patterns. In addition, due to their special role in language use, proverbs can be changed for criticism or entertainment purposes. A variety of phonetic, orthographic, semantic, syntactic, etc. changes on the existing proverb can be observed. As a matter of fact, that the proverbs are transformed into a humor with such changes is as old as the proverbs themselves. Although such changes date back to old times, the developments in the internet and media organs have a great effect on this type to become widespread. This new type of proverbs formed by the conversion, is very frequent in our daily lives. It would be appropriate to name these “genre” or the species with the term "anti-proverb" or “unusual proverbs” in Turkish, since they appear as a result of the changes at phonetic, syntactic and semantic levels on the existing proverb. From the 80s onwards, several corpora of German, Anglo-American, Hungarian, Russian and French proverbs have been prepared in various sizes. From this review, many studies have been published on the subject of proverbs. Based on these, many studies on anti-proverbs have been published. Although such proverbs are widely used in Turkish, it is difficult to say that they have been paid enough attention. It is clear that it is of great importance to bring together these proverbs so as to make a great contribution to the related research by determining the folkloric, linguistic and sociological phenomena. The present study aims to discuss this new phenomenon in Turkish and its status. © 2018 Hacettepe University 1. All rights reserved.
