Technical documentation of the user of electrical / electronic goods and their translations are of significance in today’s world of technology. From the translation studies’ point of view, the text types should be dealt with in the very first place. The distinction between the ‘scientific’ and ‘technical’ texts and their translations are accordingly addressed. To support the base of such a distinction, Byrne’s (2012) categorization of scientific and technical texts is consulted. Pursuant to this categorization, user-oriented documentation - specifically the manuals and reference documents - is explained as a subcategory. In addition, text typology (Haramundanis, 1992) and text analysis (Eruz, 2008) within the perspective of translation studies are also referred. More specifically, documentation consisting of guides and manuals are explained. The translation of user-oriented technical documents is touched upon and the concepts of technical translation or translation of specific field texts are viewed as well. Besides, standardization of technical documents for user products is another key concept to be examined. Thus, international and national standardization bodies, such as ISO, and directives (73/23/EEC EU Directive) are included within this context. Finally, communicating and translating technical documents are exemplified with an effort to inspect how technical documents are constructed and which translation strategies are used in the translation process of such texts. Since, a great number of the user-oriented technical documents consist of user guides and user manuals, the examples are provided from such texts. In this regard, a quick view on translators’ decisions and prospective views on the issue of technical translation are also addressed. © Peter Lang GmbH.en_US
