In the present thesis titled as "Image and Imagination in Abstract Sculpture," a special artistic expression form called "abstract sculpture art" is examined within the framework of image and imagination concepts. In general, image is the reflection of the objective reality in the human mind, where imagination is the general name of human's ability to visualize anything in his mind. In this context, art is actually a world of images, and the artist is the person, who sees with the language of images, thinks with the language of images, and produces with the language of images. Accordingly, work of art is, in fact, an image that is first imagined and then externalized and objectified in the imagination of the artist by means of the language of images. In order to understand the essence of anything, it is not enough to concretely know/recognize it, but abstract concepts/images about it should be derived for true knowledge. In this sense, any kind of information or transfer of information is already abstract. One of the most important abilities of mankind is the ability to abstraction, and similar to science and philosophy, art is a form of abstraction as well. In fact, sculpture has always been one of the special abstraction forms of objective reality since its first emergence in human history. Therefore, as in any abstract approach, it is essential to try to reach the existential elements of essence beyond the appearance in abstract sculpture. Although this effort nourishes on images derived from external reality, they are subject to change and transformation through a special mental mechanism, i.e. so-called sculptor imagination, as a result of which, a new construct is created. This resultant construct is a three-dimensional image in its simplest definition and is called as abstract sculpture in the form known by all sculpture is actually one of the most ancient methods of cognition and expression for human beings in reaching and transmitting truth, on the grounds that it is a product of creative imagination as well as being based on images, which are among the basic forms of abstraction and thinking.
