CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE BASIC ART EDUCATION COURSE TO THE SCULPTURE EDUCATION WITHIN COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE AND ABSTRACTION SUBJECTS

In art education faculties, the basic art education course, which is applied by the basic education departments usually with a common curriculum, is a controversial issue in our country. Sometimes basic education departments are closed and the course is removed from schools' curriculum; and sometimes random applications are encountered, which do not have a definite foundation. This paper is aimed to demonstrate the necessity of this controversial course; and in addition to being specific to the sculpture here, in fact, the course has aspects contributing to all branches of the visual arts. In this paper, within the context of composition, structure and abstraction subjects, the effects of the basic art education course to the sculpture education and possible methods, which can be taken as basis in three dimensional applications, have been examined. A student taking Basic Art Education will be able to situate his/her work without leaving any room to coincidence in a robust foundation, in terms of design elements and principles, within the observation-analysis-synthesis method and during the form production he/she will be able to answer questions, such as why and how, while understanding the methods of forming. These answers are very important; because the form is not a coincidence. A conscious design process is required and this process is included in the curriculum of the basic education department.
