Özet
The dorsal colour/pattern polymorphism of the meadow spittlebug Philaenus spumarius in NW Turkey was investigated. A total of 1,865 adult specimens, 837 females and 1,028 males, from different habitats in Edirne were examined. Only six phenotypes, represented by four different alleles, were determined: four non-melanic - typicus (TYP), populi (POP), trilineatus (TRI), and vitttatus (VIT) - and two melanic phenotypes - marginellus (MAR) and flavicollis (FLA). Non-melanics were expressed in both sexes while melanics were limited to females only. In the total specimens, the predominant phenotypes POP+TYP accounted for about 93.2%, MAR+FLA for 4.2% and TRI+VIT for 2.6%. No associations were found between any particular phenotype and habitat. The relative frequencies of the phenotypes did not change in the summer and autumn, although the proportion of females and males differed significantly between the warmer summer and cooler autumn months due to a dramatic decline in the numbers of males as the seasons progressed.
