Özet

In this study, the possibility that red wood ant Formica rufa foragers use glandular secretions as guides for route fidelity was investigated. Field and laboratory tests were performed on different trunk trails and trail branches. Worker responses to artificial trails prepared from gaster extracts in four different organic solvents, of foragers taken from two branches of a field trail were observed in the laboratory. The ability of foragers collected from one branch to distinguish between scent trails in darkness was tested. The results showed that the distribution of these foragers between two artificial trails was random and provided no evidence for the existence of group-specific pheromones.
