Özet

In the present study, radiographic grades of osteoarthritis were compared with the results of bone mineral density measured by X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) method in 24 postmenopausal women. For all the regions examined, increase in radiographic grades of osteoarthritis showed a parallel rise in bone density which was measured from the lateral part of L3 corpus. These results were especially significant for osteoarthritis of the hand and seemed to be confirmed by the other reports in the literature. Obesity was found to have no influence on osteoarthritis and osteoporosis in this study and this was a conflicting result with the previous reports. The results of our study showed that in the postmenopausal period in which the incidence of osteoporosis is expected to be high, increase in the severity of osteoarthritis coexists with the increase in vertebral bone density and it was suggested that these two conditions are inversely related.
