dc.description.abstractMany political parties and popular front movements emerged during the transformation period in Central Asia and Azerbaijan. Among the democratic parties that emerged within this political diversity, there were some that included Islamic and Panturkist thought in their programs. These parties were founded especially in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The main reason for this was that political parties with a Panturkist agenda began to appear in these countries even at the beginning of the 20th century, when Musavat Party in Azerbaijan and Alash Party in Kazakhstan struggled for the independence of their lands. Between 1989 and 1994 many political organizations were established such as the Musavat, Bozgurd and Turan Parties in Azerbaijan, the Republican Party of Kazakhstan, Alash and Azat Civil Movement in Kazakhstan and Birlik, Erk, the Watan Taraqqiyoti Parties as well as the Turkestan Popular Movement and Turkestan Islamic Popular Movement in Uzbekistan.en_US
