The impact of collaborative output tasks on efl learners grammatical competence

| dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the effectiveness of two collaborative output tasks, dictogloss and text reconstruction task, in improving EFL learners’ grammatical competence. Passive voice and if conditionals (Type 1, 2 and 3) were chosen as the target forms since they are considered as challenging for second language (L2) learners. The study involved 28 participants who were divided into an experimental group, which engaged in collaborative tasks, and a control group instructed through traditional teaching methods. A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test research design was employed and the experimental group completed two dictogloss and two text reconstruction tasks over a four-week period. According to the results of the analysis, the experimental group outperformed the ones in the control group, which indicates the efficiency of the two collaborative tasks. Additionally, following the treatments, the study aimed to explore students’ perceptions of the collaborative tasks through interviews with three students and reflective journals from all the participants. The results showed that most students held positive views about the use of these tasks whereas some students expressed a preference for using more traditional grammar exercises such as fill-in-the-blanks. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Bu çalışma, işbirlikli öğrenme aktiviteleri olarak da bilinen not-al yaz ve metni yeniden yapılandırma aktivitelerinin İngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen öğrencilerin dilbilgisel yeterliliklerini geliştirmedeki etkinliğini araştırmıştır. Edilgen yapı ve koşul cümlelerinin yabancı dil öğrenen öğrenciler için zor konular olduğu düşünüldüğünden hedef yapı olarak bu iki konu seçilmiştir. Çalışmaya, işbirlikli öğrenme aktivitelerini uygulayan deneysel bir grup ve geleneksel öğretim yöntemleriyle öğrenim gören bir kontrol grup olmak üzere 28 öğrenci katılmıştır. Yarı deneysel bir ön test-son test araştırma deseni kullanılmış ve deneysel grup, dört haftalık bir süre boyunca iki not-al yaz ve iki metni yeniden yapılandırma aktivitesi tamamlamıştır. Analiz sonuçlarına göre, deneysel grup, kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerden daha iyi performans sergilemiş ve bu bulgular işbirlikli çalışma aktivitelerinin dilbilgisi öğreniminde etkili olduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca, uygulamalardan sonra, öğrencilerin bu aktivitelere yönelik düşüncelerini araştırmak üzere üç öğrenciyle görüşülmüş ve tüm katılımcılardan öğrenci günlüğü doldurmaları istenmiştir. Sonuçlar, öğrencilerin çoğunun bu aktiviteleri kullanma konusunda olumlu görüşlere sahip olduğunu, bazı öğrencilerin boşluk doldurma gibi daha geleneksel dilbilgisi alıştırmalarını tercih ettiklerini göstermiştir. | en_US |
