dc.description.abstract | Problem Statement: The significance of literature teaching in foreign language teaching (FLT) programs has been discussed in our country, Turkey, and all over the world for many years. In this context, students' ideas and tendencies about literature teaching need to be investigated. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of the study is to investigate the attitudes of the third and fourth year students from English Language Teaching Department (ELT) at Trakya University towards literature teaching and literature courses. In the study, the answers to the research questions What do the third and fourth year students think about the literature courses, literary texts, discourse and genres? Do the students of the third year and fourth year have similar or dissimilar attitudes towards literature courses? are sought. Method: The data were collected through a Likert type scale designed for the present study with 20 items and 5 options for each item. SPSS statistical program was used for the percentile values, t-test, reliability and validity analyses of the scale. Findings and Results: The ELT students at Trakya University are in general in favour of literature teaching. They have positive attitudes to literature teaching with respect to cultural competence, language enrichment, and individual creativity. No significant differences have been found statistically between the third and fourth years students' responses. Conclusions and Recommendations: For the students' cultural competence, language enrichment and individual creativity, literature teaching needs to be regarded in a wider concept. Moreover, in elective courses, the students can be advised to take the literary courses. | en_US |
