An ultra-wideband monopole antenna with impedance steps and cross-shaped defected ground structure (CSDGS) in the ground plane is detailly presented by the compact design analysis. The defected ground structure (DGS) of the microstrip patch antenna is used to suppress higher-order harmonics and mutual coupling between adjacent elements. Incorporating impedance steps as well as DGS technique on the ground plane enhances the bandwidth of the antenna in comparison with its non-DGS counterpart. Good performance in terms of return loss and cross-polarization for improving radiation characteristics is obtained in the operation bands. The proposed antenna is more efficient and analyzed at the resonant frequency of 11.63 GHz. The designed parameters are optimized and its characteristics are investigated. Antenna performance is also found to be high. The proposed design has sufficient features to allow it to be used in WiFi, WiMAX, and RADAR applications. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.en_US
