dc.description.abstractThe Thrace region is located in the north-west part of Turkey. The region, which is the only land of Turkey in Europe, has strategic significance as well as natural beauties and resources such as forests, mountains, lakes, wetlands, coasts and seas. The total area of the Thrace region is 24 378 km(2), which covers 2.99% of the total area of Turkey. The Thrace region is one of the most industrialised and developed area of Turkey. Agriculture, industrialisation and urbanisation cause many environmental problems and degradation in the region. The Thrace region which includes coastal ecosystem, forest ecosystem, aquatic ecosystem and agricultural ecosystem, is under the pressure of the various environmental effects due to intensive land uses. Integrated ecosystems of forests, coastal zones, mountains, wetlands and other protected areas have both ecological and economical values for the people living in the region. An alternative activity, which gives priority to the protection of natural and cultural values, should be improved for the people. Environmental assessment will be used to evaluate the environmental impacts of the proposed development policy and plan about land use, agriculture, industrialisation, water management, regional development, etc. As a result of this research, environmental impacts on protected areas have been identified and evaluated in the light of various criterions.en_US
