In Turkey First Year of Pre-Service Teachers: Difference between the East and the West

Being a first year teacher in the teaching profession is a critical period in terms of the teachingprofession process. Therefore, in-depth research and understanding of the first-year teaching in theteaching profession is important in terms of practical and political practices related to the development ofthe teaching profession. In this research, the comparison of candidate teachers' first years of theirprofessional life within the east-west difference is examined in terms of the experiences and effects ofthose experiences in and out of school. The study group consists of prospective teachers working inEdirne and Van in the spring term of 2013-2014 academic year. This research has been conducted with aqualitative research approach and phenomenological desing has been utilized as research technique.Semi-structured interview form was used as data collection tool. The interviews with the participants tookplace between 25 and 40 minutes on average and the collected data were analyzed with content analysisand frequency analysis and reported by grouping according to categories. According to the results of thestudy, it is observed that there have been several differences between in (first meeting with the schoolprincipal, the mentor and the educational problems encountered) and out-school (transportation, housingand social activities and preparatory and basic trainings) experiences of the pre-service teachers workingin Edirne and the pre-service teachers working in Van during the first year of their professional life. Theresults of this study were discussed with reference to similar studies in the literature.
