Özet
In this review, role of nitric oxide (NO) on the blood and immune system have been reviewed. NO is produced from L-arginine by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NOS isoform have been divided into two categories with different regulation and activities. The constitutive isoform is neuronal or enothelial cells are always present. The inducible NOS isoform in macrophages and hepatocytes is normally absent. The inducible NOS enzyme is produced by specific cytokines. NO reduces clotting by acting directly on platelets. NO has also been found inside platelets. NO kills or inhibits the growth of many pathogens, including bacteria, fungi and parasites. The role of NO in the immune system in nonspesific and damages any cell or pathogen.
