| dc.description.abstract | This chapter focuses on Marchiafave-Bignami disease, a neurological complication of alcoholism. Marchiafava-Bignami disease is a rare disorder of an unknown etiology, but mainly associated with alcoholism. The central part of the corpus callosum is involved pathologically, but there is less involvement in the dorsal and ventral parts. The lesion in Marchiafava-Bignami disease is symmetric. Marchiafava-Bignami disease may present in various clinical signs. It includes variable degrees of mental confusion, psychotic and emotional symptoms, depression and apathy, signs of interhemispheric disconnection, seizures, impairment of consciousness, and dementia. It is diagnosed by showing the demyelination at the corpus callosum. Early reports were based mainly on postmortem evidence, whereas the advent of cranial computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging has made the diagnosis possible also in the living. It is usually slowly progressive and results in death within 3-6 years. There is no known specific therapy. Treatment should be directed at nutritional support and rehabilitation from alcoholism. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. | en_US |
