Özet

In this review, role of nitric oxide (NO) on the peripheral and central nervous systems have been reviewed. Nitric oxide is produced from L-arginine by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NO is an intracelluler messenger moleculer. NO is produced in several tissues, such as the vascular endothelium, neurons and immune cells. NO is a neurotransmitter in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Myenteric pleksus neurons contain NOS. In addition, pelvic pleksus neurons contain NOS and NO is a mediator of penile erection. NOS is present the nucleus tractus solitarius in the medulla and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and NO play an important role within these autonomic control centers. In addition, NO play an exitatory role in the respiratory brain stem nuclei.
