Determination of properties related with aerodynamic and behaviors in fluidized bed medium for separation and classification of onion sets

The objective of this research is to obtain data for developing a machine with fluidized bed medium called as dry fluid (with using air stream). This machine will be used for separation and classification of onion sets according to their density as an alternative to mechanical machines. Half-Imrali variety onion sets that are produced in Trakya Region was used as agricultural material. Physical (Equatorial diameter, polar diameter, geometric mean diameter, projection area, friction coefficient and density), aerodynamic (Resistance of airflow, drag coefficient, reynolds number and terminal velocity) and properties of fluidized bed medium of onion sets (Minimum fluidisation velocity, minimum fluidisation air flow rate and resistance coefficient) were determined for obtaining data for designing of the machine with fluidized bed medium. Measurements were performed in a vertical air tube. Digital anemometer with telescope probe and digital manometer were used to determine of the data about aerodynamic properties, and behaviour characteristics of onion sets in fluidized bed medium. In the result of trials, it was determined that density differences between onion sets groups were sufficient for separation and classification according to their density properties. Air flow velocity was determined as minimum 4.21 m/s and air flow rate was determined as minimum 0.33 in m(3)/s for the prototype machine.
