Özet
The responses of the red wood ant, Formica rufa, to an artificial trail were examined in darkness in a controlled laboratory environment using a satiated colony. Artificial trails were prepared in four different solvents from-the head, thorax + legs, and gaster extracts of foragers. Thorax + legs extracts did not elicit directional responses in foragers. Gaster extracts were-consistently followed, suggesting that trail-following is induced by pheromones issued from gastric glands. Head extracts were also followed, but foragers displayed excitement, most probably in response to an alarm message.
