Özet

Introduction Plants become stressed when they are inadequately adapted to unfavorable conditions that occur in their environment. One of these conditions is heavy metal pollution. Defense systems are activated in order to protect cells under stress conditions by keeping reducing and eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Phenolic compounds are effective at eliminating and neutralizing free radicals. This study investigates the effects of the short-term application (1 and 5 days) of arsenic, cadmium, and lead (15µM, 30µM, and 60µM mixtures) on the phenolic contents of a barley species that was registered by the Trakya Agricultural Research Institute in 2014. Material and Method In the phenolic content analyses performed on barley stems, analyses were conducted using the Agilent 1260 Infinity Liquid Chromatography (LC) and the Agilent 6460 Triple Quadrupole MS/MS System (Jet Stream Electrospray ion source). The results were first checked qualitatively and quantitative results were calculated by adding the results to the calibration graphs in the Mass Hunter QQQ Quantitative Analysis program, based on the areas of the peaks. Findings and Discussion The amounts of many compounds that exhibit phenolic features in barley plants such as reductive glutathione gallic acid, 2, 5 dihydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, catechin, trans-caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, trans p-coumaric acid, trans-ferulic acid, sialic acid, indole 3 acetic acid, transsynaptic acid, abscisic acid, luteolin, jasmonic acid, and naringin in plants treated with the mixture doses of 15µM, 30µM and 60 µM resulted in an increase and decrease when compared to the control group. It was determined that these phenolic compounds were affected by short-term heavy metal stress in barley plants and significant changes occurred in their amounts. © 2021 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
