Öğe An analysis of genetic transmission in a father and son with osteosarcoma(2006) Tokatli F.; Alas R.C.; Altaner S.; Pala F.; Uygun K.; Uzal C.; Yalniz E.Familial osteosarcoma is a rare hereditary disease. We present a 37-year-old father and a 17-year-old son who developed osteosarcoma in the left and right distal femurs, respectively, at a three-year interval. They were treated with chemotherapy followed by surgery. Both had positive immunostaining for p53 tumor suppressor gene and HER-2/neu oncogene. The son also exhibited deletion of the retinoblastoma 1 gene. Pulmonary metastasis was detected in the father at the time of diagnosis and 13 months after primary treatment, whereas no distant metastasis was present in the child. The father died 39 months after the diagnosis from primary symptoms, but the son led a disease-free survival a year after completion of treatment. Genetic abnormalities documented in the father and son corroborate the presence of specific genetic alterations in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma.Öğe A case of isolated bilateral renal metastases from carcinoma of the lung(2004) Uzal M.C.; Koçak Z.; Uygun K.; Altaner Ş.; Gözen S.; Ünlü E.Renal metastases in patients with history of cancer may mimic primary renal tumors. When the kidneys are the only known pathological sites in patients with locally controlled disease, the differentiation of renal metastases and primary renal cell carcinoma may be very difficult clinically and radiologically. A case of lung carcinoma developing isolated bilateral renal metastases that was recognized ante mortem is described.Öğe CYP1A1, GSTM1 and NQO1 gene polymorphisms: Genetic risk factors for small cell lung cancer(2005) Demirkan A.; Vural B.; Üstüner Z.; Uygun K.; Açikalin B.Ö.; Derin D.; Saip P.Smoking plays the major role in the development of lung cancer. CYP1A1, GSTM1 and NQO1 gene polymorphisms are thought to be related with some types of cancer considering their important roles in the detoxification pathway of certain carcinogens present in tobacco smoke. These polymorphisms are being widely studied in tobacco related cancer; especially in lung cancer. In this study, we investigated the frequencies of these metabolic gene polymorphisms in our smoking small cell lung cancer patient group (n=93) and ever smoking healthy control subjects (n=126). CYP1A1 ile/val, GSTM1 null/present and NQO1 pro/ser genotype analysis were performed using standard techniques. Compared with the healthy controls, NQO1 ser/ser genotype and ser allele frequency were significantly higher in SCLC patients' group [p=0.045 and p=0.013 (OR = 1.82; 95% CI 1.13-2.93), respectively]. We have found that CYP1A1 ile/ile + NQO1 pro/pro combined genotype was significantly higher in the control group [p<0.001 (OR = 3.45; 95% CI 1.79-6.65)]. Also, CYP1A1 ile/ile+GSTM1 non-null+NQO1 pro/pro combined genotype was significantly higher in the control group than the SCLC patients [p<0.001 (OR = 3.51; 95% CI 1.82-6.75)].Öğe Peutz-Jeghers syndrome combined with breast cancer, cervical carcinoma and ovarian gonadoblastoma: A case report(2004) Tokatli F.; Tunçbilek N.; Öz Puyan F.; Denizli B.; Ibiş K.; Bayir G.; Uygun K.Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by gastrointestinal polyps, mucocutaneous pigmentation and an increased risk for cancer. In this report, a 34-year-old woman with PJS associated with a rare ovarian tumor (gonadoblastoma) and synchronous breast and cervical carcinoma is discussed and the relevant literature is reviewed. © 2004 Zerbinis Medical Publications.Öğe Radiation recall dermatitis: A case report(2004) Tokatli F.; Uygun K.; Tunçbilek N.; Bayir G.; Ibiş K.; Uzal C.Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) refers to a tissue reaction produced by a chemotherapeutic agent in a previously irradiated field. Most of RRD reported in literature concerned taxans. We report a case of RRD occurring in a metastatic breast cancer patient receiving paclitaxel shortly after completion of radiation therapy to bone metastases.Öğe Small cell carcinoma of the rectum; Report of a case(2002) Tokatli F.; Koçak Z.; Özyilmaz F.; Uygun K.; Çaloglu M.; Uzal C.Primary small cell undifferentiated carcinoma of the colon and rectum is a relatively rare tumour with an overall incidence of less than 1% among all colorectal cancers. These tumours are highly aggressive as distant metastases occur even when the primary tumour is limited to the submucosa or mucosa. Despite the mean survival being around 6 months, long-term survival may be achieved in patients with localized disease treated with curative resection and adjuvant therapy. We report on a patient with Dukes' C small cell carcinoma (SCC) of the rectum who underwent surgery followed by pelvic irradiation and chemotherapy and achieved long-term survival.
