Öğe Changes in parents' attitudes towards childhood vaccines during COVID-19 pandemic(Wiley, 2023) Duran, Sedef; Duran, Ridvan; Acunas, Betul; Sahin, Erkan MelihBackground: Concerns about the safety and adverse reactions of rapidly-developed vaccines against COVID-19 contributed to parents' vaccine hesitancy and this situation created an opportunity for anti-vaccine campaigners. The aim of this study was to examine the changes in parents' attitudes towards childhood vaccines during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, parents of children who applied to the outpatient clinic of pediatric department of Trakya University Hospital, Edirne, Turkiye, between August 2020 and February 2021 were recruited into two study groups according to COVID-19 peak time in Turkiye. Group 1 included parents of children who applied after first peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and Group 2 included parents of children who applied after second peak. The World Health Organization 10-item Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (WHO-VHS) was applied to each group. Results: A total of 610 parents agreed to participate in the study. Group 1 and 2 consisted of 160 and 450 parents, respectively. While the number of parents who were hesitant about childhood vaccines was 17 (10.6%) in Group 1, it was 90 (20%) in Group 2. A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups ( p = 0.008). The (WHO-VHS) mean +/- SD score was found to be higher in Group 2 (23.7 +/- 6.9) than Group 1 (21.3 +/- 7.3) (p < 0.001). The WHO-VHS-mean +/- SD scores of parents who experienced COVID-19 infection themselves or their family or acquaintances were significantly lower than those who did not (20.0 +/- 6.5 vs. 24.7 +/- 6.9) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The hesitant attitudes towards childhood and COVID-19 vaccines were low in parents who directly or indirectly experienced COVID-19 or were worried about the devastating effects of this disease. However, it was shown that as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, parents' hesitations towards childhood vaccines increased.Öğe Diagnosis and treatment of hydatid cysts(Aves Yayincilik, Ibrahim Kara, 2008) Sahin, Erkan Melih; Yuksek, Yunus Nadi; Daglar, Guel; Gozalan, Ugur; Kama, Nuri AydinObjectives: Hydatidosis is frequently seen in Turkey due to social and geographical conditions. Data on diagnostic evaluation, medical and surgical treatments, and follow-up results were reviewed. Results: The most frequent complaints were abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Fifty-four patients were found normal on physical examination. The most frequent findings were hepatomegaly and abdominal mass. The cysts developed in other abdominal organs other than the liver in 21 patients. Treatment was medical in 16 patients, and six patients underwent PAIR (Percutaneous aspiration, injection, and reaspiration). The preferred surgical procedure was partial cystectomy. Medical treatment was added to surgery in 55 patients. The most frequent surgical complication was wound infection (12.8%). Recurrences were encountered in 16.3%. Conclusion: Conservative surgery which is the preferred option for main line of treatment is adequate and reliable for hydatidosis. Addition of medical agents may increase treatment success rate.Öğe Effects of Sleep Hygiene Education on Subjective Sleep Quality and Academic Performance(Derman Medical Publ, 2016) Sahin, Erkan Melih; Ozturk, Levent; Oyekcin, Demet Gulec; Uludag, AysegulAim: Sleep problems are common in students with one third of university students reporting insufficient sleep. It is known that sleep quality and daytime sleepiness cause decrasing academic performans. For this reason we aimed to investigate the effects of a sleep hygiene education on sleep quality and academic performance of first year medical students. Material and Method: Self-reported sleep data and academic performance of 131 first grade medical students were collected. To all students enrolled Pittsburg Sleep Quality Scale in the assessment of sleep quality and Epworth Sleepiness Scale for assessment of daytime sleepiness in the evaluation. The students were divided into two subgroups and the intervention group received a 30 minute structured sleep hygiene education. Global academic performance was assessed by grade point average at the end of the year. Results: Mean Pittsburgh sleep quality index score of the students was 7.9 +/- 3.5 and 106 (82.8%) of then had a score >= 5. After intervention,. the worse the initial sleep quality, the more improvement by the sleep hygiene education on sleep quality and academic performance. Daily energy intake, the percentage of carbohydrates in the food pattern, and daily sugar consumption were found to be higher in children who paid attention to food advertisements compared to those who did not (p<0.05). It was determined that the consumption of chocolate, wafer, soda and fruit juice increased as the television viewing time increased (p<0.05).
