Öğe Effects of Acute Physical Exercise and Acute Mental Exercise on Simple Visual Reaction Time(Trakya Üniversitesi, 2019) Kef, Berkay; Elibol, Alperen; Şenyiğit, Ece; İpsalalı, Hasan Orkun; Gölbaşı, Umutcan; Atay, Fatih Erkan; Mutlu, Arda UlaşAims: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of acute physical exercise and acute mental exercise on visual reactiontime in healthy medical students. Methods: We used a simple reaction time task software developed by the researchers to measure the visual reaction times of the subjects. Reaction times of subjects as well as pulse rates were measured on three different occasions: basal (resting), post acute mental exercise and post acute physical exercise. The acute physical exercise was constructedto last for 5 minutes in a way that would double the basal pulse rate of the participant. The acute mental exercise was induced byfive minutes of ADD-3 arithmetics. All volunteered physically healthy medical students from four different medical schools inTurkey without red-green color deficiencies were included in the study. Results: A total of 232 (136 male, 96 female) individualswith a mean age of 20.79 ± 1.42 were included in the study. Differences between basal reaction time and post-physical exercisereaction time; the basal reaction time and post-mental exercise reaction time were found to be statistically significant. Basalreaction time of participants was found to be the key element deriving both post-mental and physical exercise reaction times. Also, one unit increase in the number of ADD-3 problems solved was associated with 0.21 units decrease in post-mental exercisereaction time. Conclusion: Both acute mental exercise and acute physical exercise can shorten visual reaction time. Our resultsalso indicate that there might be a relationship between arithmetic capability (ADD-3 arithmetics performance) and visual reaction time. Methods: University students between 18-25 years old who suffer from low back pain were enrolled in the study. Short Form-36 Health Survey and Oswestry Disability Index were used as the reference scales of lower back pain and quality of life, respectively. There are some questions in the questionnaire to scale the average comfort of the place they sleep and sit during the day, which is the result of the Personal Comfort Score. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for non-normal distributed variables. Correlation and Linear Regression were used to analyze data. SPSS 25.0 was used for all statistical analysis. Results: A total of 139 university students (94 females, 45 males) were included in the study. The median age was 20 years (IQR=2) for female students and 20 years (IQR=1) for male students. Oswestry Disability Index scores of fe- male students were higher, while Short Form-36 scores were lower than the male students. Male students' physical functioning scores were higher than female students. Each one-unit increase in Personal Comfort Score is associated with an increase in the rate between the energy/fatigue (3.34 units). Body Mass Index considerably affected the pain and Oswestry Disability Score, an increase in one unit of baseline BMI upsurged the Short Form-36 pain score to 0.13, and Oswestry disability score to 0.55. Conc- lusion: In our study, Body Mass Index is found to be associated with Oswestry Disability Index and Short Form-36 score, which are used for the severity of low back pain and defining the life quality and of patients. PCS had a positive correlation between energy/fatigue. In addition, There was a positive correlation between physical exercise and general health score.Öğe A Newborn With Esophageal Atresia, Tracheoesophageal Fistula and Feeding Problems(Trakya Üniversitesi, 2019) Mutlu, Arda Ulaş; Kızılkaya, Oğuz; İnan, MustafaAims: Esophageal atresia is the most common congenital malformation of the esophagus. It can be diagnosed in the prenatalperiod, during the delivery or at the neonatal intensive care unit. With the operation, the respiratory system and digestive tractare being corrected to the anatomic position. In this case, we wanted to emphasize that patients with esophageal atresia maycontinue to have functional problems even after successful surgical treatment. Case Report: After preterm delivery, a femalepatient was consulted to Trakya University Department of Pediatric Surgery, at one day of age with the symptom of regurgitationof saliva. There were no abnormalities on physical examination. Due to the inability to pass an orogastric tube to the stomach, esophageal atresia was suspected. Thus, radiocontrast x-ray study was performed: the proximal esophageal pouch was identified, and malformation was diagnosed. After the diagnosis, tracheoesophageal fistula has been ligated. The patient received physicaltherapy after the operation, and she was followed-up for 10 months. A full recovery was observed, and the patient was able toswallow food. Conclusion: Esophageal atresia with distal tracheoesophageal fistula is not an uncommon malformation. Thepatients can have problems with swallowing in their infancy even they are treated surgically in the neonatal period. Keywords: Esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, newbornÖğe Vanillin: Is It Just An Aromatic Or a Cure For Cancer?(Trakya Üniversitesi, 2019) Mutlu, Arda Ulaş; Kanev, Martin; Zenginer, Büşra Diler; Dıbırdık, İlkerAbstract: Cancer is one of the most challenging diseases mankind has confronted, and it is listed as the second most common reason of death according to the World Health Organization. Its damage to global economy is valued trillions of dollars and it is increasing day by day. This literature review is aiming to reflect on vanillin's anticancer potential, a natural chemical being used in different industrial areas. Beside flavour, it is a powerful antioxidant and a strong antimutagenic. Oxidative stress and mutati-ons are two major reasons for carcinogenesis. Therefore, the cancer prevention and/or therapeutic potential of vanillin is being investigated. Many studies using different cell lines have noted that vanillin had positive effects on cancer.
