Öğe The Assesment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Patients Admiting to Gaziantep University of Medicine Faculty Leishmaniasis Diagnosis and Treatment Center(2015) Korkmaz S.; Özgöztaşı O.; Kayıran N.OBJECTIVE: Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a curable clinical condition characterized by atrophic scars caused by the Leishmania species of protozoan parasites. In the period following the beginning of the Syrian Civil War, there has been a dramatic increase in number of CL cases in Gaziantep. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of CL patients admitted to Gaziantep University of Medicine Faculty Leishmaniasis diagnosis and treatment center in Gaziantep.METHODS: Within the context of this study, a total of 635 CL patients admitted between 01 April 2013 and 01 April 2014 to the Leishmaniasis diagnosis and treatment center of the Gaziantep were evaluated retrospectively. Patient data regarding age, sex, the location of lesions, the number of lesions, the duration of the lesions, and the months in which the lesions appeared were recorded and statistically analyzed.RESULTS: Of these patients, 67 (10.6%) were Turkish citizens, while 568 (89.4%) were Syrian citizens. In addition, 299 (47.1%) of the patients were female, while 336 (52.9%) were male. The large majority of the cases were between 5-9 (n=140, 22%) and 10-19 (n=168, 26.5%) years of age; 66% of all cases were below 20 years of age. An evaluation of the distribution of cases according to the months revealed that the lowest number of cases occurred in the months of July (n=14, 2.2%) and August (n=13, 2.0%), while the highest number of cases occurred in the months of January (n=122, 19.2%) and February (n=106, 16.7%).CONCLUSION: Cutaneous Leishmaniasis is a condition that affects individuals of all ages and genders. It is thus necessary to conduct regular health screenings for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, and to inform and educate vulnerable communities and the society in general regarding this condition.Öğe A case of acquired lymphangiectasia mimicking cutaneous metastasis(Turkiye Klinikleri, 2015) Korkmaz S.; Dinçer N.; Taştekin E.; Can N.; Pişkin S.Acquired lymphangiectasia is a condition of superficial lymphatic vessels expansion. This condition develops in cases of lymphatic drainage corruption and obstruction of lymphatic vessels, due to various external factors. In the formation of acquired lymphangiectasia may be responsible malignancy, surgery, Crohn's disease, radiotherapy, keloids and infections. Clinically, in patients, bright vesicles, bullae and lymphedema are seen. This entity is important in patients with malignancies, because the image can be confused with cutaneous metastasis. Therefore the diagnosis and treatment is very important. Our patient was a fifty-one years old female, who has undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer, four years ago. Since three months, distally of the operation area erythematous bright, not showing sensitivity papular lesions were noticed in the patient, undergone also chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Punch biopsy of the lesions was made. This patient, diagnosed histopathologically with cutaneous acquired lymphangiectasia was presented in accompanation of the literature.Öğe A Case of neonatal lupus erythematosus(OrtadogŸu Reklam Tanitim Yayincilik Turizm Egitim Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., 2016) Korkmaz S.; Alada? Çiftdemir N.; Dinçer N.; Acunaş B.A.; Pişkin S.Neonatal lupus erythematosus is a rare disease of infants, that are born of a mother with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren's syndrome and other collagen vascular diseases. The occurrence of the disease is due to transplacental transmission of anti-SSA/Ro, anti-SSB/La, and less frequently anti-U1RNP antibodies during pregnancy. The main clinical symptoms of the patient are dermatological, hematological, hepatic and cardiac manifestations. Although the skin is involved in 15-25% of patients, a variety of systemic involvement other than skin can be seen. NLE, can lead to morbidity and mortality with systemic involveament. Therefore, NLE should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of neonatal annular lesions. Here, a 22-day old male patient, who was diagnosed with NLE, accompanied by clinical and laboratory findings, was presented. © Copyright 2016 by Türkiye Klinikleri.Öğe Compliance of abstracts of randomized control trials with CONSORT guidelines: A case study of Balkan journals(Pensoft Publishers, 2022) Sut N.; Kocak Z.; Korkmaz S.; Uzun C.Background: Published reports of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are not compliant with the CONSORT checklist as much as they should. Objective: To assess the quality, in terms of the level to which they are compliant with the CONSORT checklist, of abstracts of RCTs published in general medical journals in the Balkan region. Methods: Two observers assessed the abstracts of RCTs published in five general medical journals of the Balkan region between 2012 and 2018 to determine the level to which the abstracts were compliant with the 16-item CONSORT abstracts checklist. Results: Of the 183 studies that were identified for evaluation, 124 (67.8%) were excluded from the evaluation. The average compliance level was 44.5% (95% CI: 41.9%–47.1%), the lowest being that for randomization (1.7%), funding (1.7%), numbers analysed (11.0%), blinding (13.6%), and trial registration (18.6%). However, the compliance level was very high for conclusions (99.2%), objectives (96.6%), interventions (95.8%), and primary outcomes (83.9%). The length of the abstract (word count) and the level of compliance were positively correlated (rs = 0.43; p = 0.001). Abstracts of trials published in journals that endorse CONSORT in their publication policies were more compliant than those published in other journals (47.5 ± 10.4 versus 40.8 ± 8.0, p = 0.024). Conclusion: The overall level of compliance with the CONSORT checklist was below 50%. To improve the quality of abstracts of RCTs, authors should be encouraged to use the CONSORT checklist, and editors should check compliance with the CONSORT guidelines as part the publishing workflow. © 2022, Pensoft Publishers. Campy-lobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the principal causes of bacterial foodborne gastroenteritis in humans. Campylobacter infections are closely related to the consumption of contaminated chicken. Campylobacter species develop resistance to existing antibiotics thanks to the genomic plasticity. There is therefore a higher need to develop effective approaches for bacterial control in modern food industry and clinical settings. Presented study has evaluated the anti-campylobacter activity and antioxidant capacity of eugenol, the primary phenolic component of clove oil. Two C. jejuni strains (ATCC 33560 and one chicken isolate) and two C. coli strains (NCTC 12525 and one chicken isolate) were used in the study. The anti-campylobacter activity of eugenol was analyzed by microbroth dilution method. Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentration (MIC and MBC) were in the range of 0.64-1.28 mg mL-1. Besides, our MTT assay findings showed that eugenol has strong scavenging ability. These outcomes have supported both the anti-campylobacter and antioxidant activity of eugenol. Eugenol is generally recognized as safe and is a promising antimi-crobial compound against the genus Campylobacter. © 2022, Istanbul Medipol University. The results indicated that black individuals tend to occur more frequently in the habitats than in shady habitats. The body length of the black coloured 14-spot ladybirds was significantly smaller than that of the yellow individuals. The pooled data consisted of 66 % black and 34 % yellow forms. © TÜBİTAK.Öğe Serum prolidase levels and its relation with severity of acne vulgaris(Scientific Publishers of India, 2018) Günay E.; Korkmaz S.; Turan F.N.Background: The pathogenesis of acne vulgaris is multifactorial and inflammation plays a prominent role in the process. In clinical trials, independent from tissue type; it is found out that prolidase levels and activity are differing in numerous malign and chronic inflammatory processes on which collagen turnover is accelerated. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between serum prolidase levels and acne severity in acne vulgaris. Methods: Thirty patients with mild to moderate Acne Vulgaris (AV), 30 with severe AV and 28 healthy volunteers were included in the study. The GAS was used to determine disease severity in patients with AV. Serum prolidase levels were measured by ELISA method. Results: There were not statistically different between the groups in term of serum prolidase levels (p=0.819). In addition, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p=0.647 for AV groups, p=0.926 for severe AV and healthy control, and p=0.539 for mild-moderate AV and healthy control). There was no statistically significant correlation between GAS and prolidase levels in patients with severe AV (r=0.207, p=0.273) and mild-moderate AV (r=0.162, p=0.392). Conclusions: In conclusion, there was no significant difference in serum prolidase levels in patients with AV. New studies with wide case series are necessary to determine the role of prolidase on the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. © 2018, Scientific Publishers of India. All rights reserved.
