Öğe Comparison of urban housing satisfaction in modern and traditional neighborhoods in Edirne, Turkey(Springer, 2007) Erdogan, Nevnihal; Akyol, Ayse; Ataman, Berk; Dokmeci, VediaNumerous cross-cultural studies have focused on certain aspects of urban housing conditions and their social consequences. However, most data on housing satisfaction is restricted to Western countries. Relatively little comparison has been made between these findings and those in developing areas where rapid urbanization is occurring and where concomitant problems in urban housing are emerging. Moreover, since primary cities of developing countries in the initial stage of economic development have received extensive attention in urban housing research, it would be interesting to examine a non-primary city where relatively good standards of living have been achieved. Thus, this study investigates people's housing satisfaction in modern and historical neighborhoods. This paper addresses some conceptual and measurement issues related to the study of housing satisfaction. We build a conceptual model, which links the multiple dimensions of housing satisfaction, measured by a modified version of Bardo and Dokmeci's (1992, Genetic, Social and General Psychology Monographs 118(3)) housing satisfaction scale, in a causal sense. An empirical examination of the model in traditional and modern neighborhoods reveals that social and environmental living conditions positively influence overall housing satisfaction. The results also indicate that the drivers of the social and environmental living conditions constructs differ between traditional and modern neighborhoods.Öğe Housing satisfaction in a traditional neighborhood of Izmit, Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2019) Erdogan, Nevnihal; Ovali, Pinar; Kayapinar, OzgurPurpose The purpose of this paper was to investigate housing satisfaction in a traditional neighborhood of Izmit, Turkey. According to this purpose, it was investigated whether the perceived living conditions (PLC) were mediating the effect on participants' general housing satisfaction caused by satisfaction with the perceived quality of facilities (FQP), satisfaction with performance of local authorities (LA), satisfaction with social relations (SR) and satisfaction with physical surrounding (PS) in the Topcular neighborhood of Izmit District in Kocaeli, Turkey. Design/methodology/approach According to the hypotheses developed within the framework of the theoretical model, by using structural equation modeling (SEM), first, the direct relations between the variables were tested (PLC -> overall housing satisfaction (OHS); PS, SR, LA -> PLC; FQP -> LA), then the indirect relationships between the variables were analyzed with the mediated role of OHS (PS, SR, LA -> OHS -> PLC). Findings The results show that all factors affected the OHS through the PLC. In conclusion, as the living conditions of the individual living in the neighborhood improve, the conditions take an active role in the relationship between the OHS and the satisfaction with the other relevant factors in the neighborhood, namely, PS, SR and performance of LA. In this relationship, it is seen that the satisfaction with PS has a negative effect, while the satisfaction with SR and satisfaction with the performance of LA have positive effects. Research limitations/implications - The study was applied only to Turkey's Izmit Province. Research may also be applied to other cities apart from those in Turkey. A small sample was also used in the study. Reaching a wider sampling for SEM can lead to different results. Practical implications - Planners and designers should consider satisfaction - including various factors involved in planning, designing and refurbishing the neighborhoods - as the most important design data. Originality/value The originality of the paper is based on revealing the factors affecting the housing satisfaction of people living in the province of Izmit. This study offers a framework to LA such as policymakers and urban planners to develop relevant and effective strategies and to improve dissatisfactory conditions in new and peripheral areas.Öğe Socio-Cultural and Physical Transformation of Edirne Citadel Traditional Settlement(Kocaeli Univ, Fac Architecture & Design, 2014) Atik, Damla; Erdogan, NevnihalThe processes of change observed in many fields today such as urbanization, urban transformation and globalization which all are caused by socio-cultural, technological, economic and politic factors have great influence on people, relationships, living environments, houses and cities. Existing as a loop these dynamics interact with each other and structure the new parts of the city as well as transform the old / traditional settlements. It is seen that traditional lifestyle and buildings have changed and/or decreased in terms of functional incompetence and dilapidation in accordance with these transformations and changing requirements of the century. It is possible to state that the traditional housing areas, as an important component for cultural sustainability and worthy of historical heritage have transformed accordingly in terms of socio-cultural and physical ways with their users. Some questions occur at that point such as How can we find out if a settlement haystransformed / to which grade has it transformed?, How can the transformation of a traditional settlement be formulated?, In which grade can these transformations be accepted favorably? It is aimed in this study to answer these questions using a method for comparison of traditional housing area parameters with contemporary (new) housing area parameters and examine in the Edirne-Kaleigi Traditional Settlement determining the physical and sociocultural changes in traditional housing area.Öğe SOCIO-CULTURAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE TRADITIONAL EDIRNE HOUSE(Nova Science Publishers, Inc, 2009) Erdogan, Nevnihal; Atik, DamlaStudies of cultural differences in architecture and the interrelation between culture and architecture have begun to receive attention in a major way primarily in the last twenty years. In this paper an abstract model of the relationship seen between cultural and social values and architecture are presented, and a case study of the traditional Edirne house in Turkey is provided to help exemplify and clarify the model. So with this approach, this relationship has been analyzed through the traditional Edirne house in which different ethnical and cultural groups live. The relationship between house form and socio-cultural factors can be explained within a model. Therefore, a model is used which consists Of four parts and is flexible is used. It shows the linkages between architectural artifacts selected or devised by Culture, architectural values, social norms and social values. The elements depicted in the model can be probed by the systematic exploration of some questions like What architectural artifacts are in use? What architectural values affected the circumscription of the choice of artifacts? The model is illustrated through a case study of the traditional Edirne house, focusing on how social values, such as religious beliefs and male-female relationships, the family structure, the status of the family in the society, the privacy of the family, the neighborhood, hospitality, and social values in a Turkish-Islamic tradition relate to build form in Edirne. Finally, the traditional Edirne house is used to explain an artifact of culture that is a synthesis of the subcultures of Thrace and Anatolia.
