Öğe Decreased nocturnal synthesis of melatonin in patients with coronary artery disease(Elsevier Sci Ireland Ltd, 2003) Yaprak, M; Altun, A; Vardar, A; Aktoz, M; Ciftci, S; Ozbay, GIn human beings, cardiovascular activity has a distinct circadian variation: Heart rate, blood pressure, and vascular tone decrease at night. Nocturnal cardiovascular blunting is at least partially linked to the autonomic activity and increased risk of cardiac and cerebral events. To assess whether decreased nocturnal melatonin synthesis and secretion in coronary artery disease (CAD), we investigated nocturnal secretion pattern of melatonin in patients with CAD and healthy subjects. The present study performed in 16 patients with angiographically documented CAD (aged 46-71 years) and in nine healthy controls (aged 36-66 years). Blood samples were collected every 2 h between 22:00 and 08:00 h. Melatonin levels were measured with a commercially available radioimmunoassay kit. We found large interindividual variation in the pattern of melatonin secretion in both groups. Patients with CAD secreted less nocturnal melatonin at 02:00, 04:00 and 08:00 h than control subjects (P=0.014, P=0.04 and P=0.025, respectively). Peak and A melatonin (peak-lowest melatonin) were found lower in patients with CAD (48.6 [19.1-75.4] vs. 131.4 [67.8-137.2] pg/ml, P=0.006 and 43 [10.5-68.5] vs. 107.6 [55.7-113.1] pg/ml, P=0.002, respectively). Peak time of melatonin secretion was observed earlier in patients with CAD (02:00 h [23:00-02:00 h] vs. 03:45 h [02:00-05:00 h], P=0.04). Our study provides useful and preliminary information about decreased nocturnal melatonin synthesis and release in patients with CAD might help physicians in managing these patients. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-one sonographically and biochemically diagnosed women with PCOS, 19 with PCO and 14 healthy women were recruited for the study. Serum TNF-alpha levels were measured in all three groups. Insulin and glucose serum concentrations were analyzed before and after a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test in all samples. The serum TNF-alpha, glucose and insulin levels were compared in PCOS, PCO and controls. RESULTS: Serum TNF-alpha levels were similar in the PCOS and PCO groups (23.67 +/- 5.58 and 13.58 +/- 1.34 pg/mL, respectively) and significantly higher than in the control group. Serum TNF-alpha levels did not significantly correlated with body mass index, serum total testosterone, LH, DHEAS, fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels or glucose and insulin area under the curve values in the three groups. CONCLUSION: We found similar TNF-alpha levels in patients with PCOS and with PCO; however, there was no correlation between the TNF-alpha and insulin, glucose and androgen levels in the study.Öğe Levels of superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde in primary spontaneous pneumothorax(Carfax Publishing, 2004) Tabakoglu, E; Ciftci, S; Hatipoglu, ON; Altiay, G; Caglar, TTHE aim of the present study is to determine whether patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) are subject to oxidative stress. For this purpose, we measured the activities of red blood cell superoxide dismutase, which is an antioxidant enzyme, and the level of plasma malondialdehyde, which is one of the lipid peroxidation markers, in a group of patients with PSP. The study was carried out with 16 patients with PSP and 24 healthy individuals. The two groups were similar to each other in terms of sex, age and smoking attitudes. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity was found to be significantly lower in patients with PSP than in the control group (p < 0.01). The plasma malondialdehyde levels were significantly high in patients with PSP (p < 0.01). Our results suggest that oxidative stress may contribute to the pathogenesis of PSP.Öğe The relationship between the levels of plasma total homocysteine and insulin resistance in uncomplicated mild-to-moderate primary hypertension(Nature Publishing Group, 2006) Ustundag, S; Arikan, E; Sen, S; Esgin, H; Ciftci, SPrimary hypertension ( HT) is the most frequent independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It was demonstrated that plasma total homocysteine ( tHcy) is an important and modifiable cardiovascular risk factor, which correlates with the severity of atherosclerotic disease, 1 despite some discordant results. 2 Although data supporting the cause-effect relationship between HT and tHcy are limited, tHcy may play a role in the pathogenesis of HT.
