Öğe Evaluation of hotel buildings by users within the scope of environmental sustainability (Edirne)(Peter Lang AG, 2020) Ovali P.K.; Çakir H.K.; Atik D.Focusing on accommodation buildings in the context of environmental sustainability, the expectations of the users from the hotels they stay in the context of environmental sensitivity are questioned besides their opinions on the concept of sustainability in this study. The questionnaire prepared for Edirne is based on the criteria of sustainable architecture and green star certificate. A total of 213 people participated in the questionnaire which was applied by random sampling method in three hotels in different locations in Edirne city center and currently not having green star certificate. Within the scope of the survey, the following findings regarding the expectations of accommodation buildings were reached: a) It is important for users that the hotel has environmental approaches; the green star certificate is a reason for preference. b) The basic expectation from the sustainable accommodation buildings is that they should be designed within the scope of ecological architectural criteria (renewable energy, recyclable material, waste management, heat insulation, water saving, etc.). Another important finding of the study is that users have a tendency to change their standard expectations in order to increase the number of ecological accommodation buildings. This study provides incentive information for hospitality sector operators in order to direct their existing buildings to a green certificate. © Peter Lang AG 2020.Öğe Socio-cultural factors that affect the traditional edirne house(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2009) Erdogan N.; Atik D.Studies of cultural differences in architecture and the interrelation between culture and architecture have begun to receive attention in a major way primarily in the last twenty years. In this paper an abstract model of the relationship seen between cultural and social values and architecture are presented, and a case study of the traditional Edirne house in Turkey is provided to help exemplify and clarify the model. So with this approach, this relationship has been analyzed through the traditional Edirne house in which different ethnical and cultural groups live. The relationship between house form and socio-cultural factors can be explained within a model. Therefore, a model is used which consists of four parts and is flexible is used. It shows the linkages between architectural artifacts selected or devised by culture, architectural values, social norms and social values. The elements depicted in the model can be probed by the systematic exploration of some questions like “What architectural artifacts are in use?" “What architectural values affected the circumscription of the choice of artifacts?" The model is illustrated through a case study of the traditional Edirne house, focusing on how social values, such as religious beliefs and male-female relationships, the family structure, the status of the family in the society, the privacy of the family, the neighborhood, hospitality, and social values in a Turkish-Islamic tradition relate to build form in Edirne. Finally, the traditional Edirne house is used to explain an artifact of culture that is a synthesis of the subcultures of Thrace and Anatolia. © 2009 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
