Öğe Creative information services at the public libraries of Istanbul(Balkan Libraries Union, 2016) Altay, Ahmet; Tekin, AmmarToday, when the library using habits decrease day by day, public libraries need to adapt to daily shifting conditions in order to reach their aims and continue their existences. If public libraries could foresee the changes and start them, they would be the Avant-garde institutions of their societies. Within this context, it is very important for public library staff, particularly the executors and librarians, to generate innovation by uncovering their creative energies. Defined as the producing originality in a field, creativity exists in every person and is a perfectible feature. It is possible to say that the individual, organization and society to be beneficial by treating the created innovations and converting them into society’s benefit. Undoubtedly, it can be provided via public libraries’ creative, innovative and entrepreneur organizational structure and operation. In this study, creativity is analyzed by searching answers for the question why public libraries should canalize to creative services. Additionally, by addressing to Istanbul’s situation, examples of the creative information services held at the public libraries of Istanbul is presented.Öğe Evaluation of arabic children’s books in the public libraries of Vienna within the frame of library services provided for child members who are native arabic speakers(Balkan Libraries Union, 2020) Altay, Ahmet; Demir, HüseyinPublic libraries are one of the educational and cultural institutions supporting the native language development of the children from multilingual societies. In this study, the Arabic children’s books in the public libraries of Vienna have been analyzed within the frame of the library services provided for the child members who are native Arabic speakers in Vienna where people from different countries, cultures, religions and languages live together. The data applied in the study were obtained from the electronic online catalogues and web pages of the public libraries in Vienna and analyzed by applying descriptive analysis method. Within this framework,the services provided by the libraries for the child members who are native speakers of other languages were also examined by analyzing the webpages of the public libraries in the city for the study, and the Arabic children’s books in the public libraries were detected through the electronic online catalogues of the public libraries in Vienna. The detected Arabic books were analyzed by classifying them based on the libraries they are in, their publication dates, age groups, languages, language use and contents. As a result of the study, it was discovered that the collection development policies related to the Arabic children’s books of the public libraries in Vienna primarily focus on the preschool period, that the majority of the Arabic children’s books in the public libraries are multilingual, and that contents of the books can help children to discover themselves and their surroundings. Additionally, it was also detected that some of the children’s books in the libraries have the content preparing them for multicultural and multilingual life and developing their empathy skills.Öğe The libraries in the Ottoman State(Balkan Libraries Union, 2015) Altay, AhmetLibraries, from past to present, have played a vital role in the process of developing, preserving and passing down culture by providing the information that the society, in which they have a place, have needed. Libraries, at the same time, are the institutions which are a part of the society and reflect the features of the society. With these aspects, libraries have an important position in the lives of societies and states both historically and culturally. In this study, libraries established in the Ottoman Empire from its foundation to collapse have been handled within a historical scope in general terms. In addition, in this study, both the effects of Ottoman library tradition upon political, social and cultural lives and the effects of the changes in the political, social and cultural lives in the Ottoman Empire on the libraries have been analyzed. Within the scope of the study, a general evaluation has been held in the area of library types ranging from the Waqf Libraries to Turkish Hearths Libraries established in Ottoman Empire.Öğe A migration story from İstanbul to Sofia: The Ottoman archival records in Bulgarian St Cyril and Methodius National Library(Balkan Libraries Union, 2017) Altay, AhmetWith the Ottoman archival records it hosts, Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, is the third biggest Ottoman archive center of the world following İstanbul and Cairo. St Cyril and Methodius National Library, which is located here, are extremely important institutions for Turkish history. The national library has more than one million Ottoman archival records. It is possible to come across an archival record concerning a wide geography where Ottoman State reigned. A small part of the archival records in the library consists of the records descended from the Ottoman Empire while retreating from Bulgaria. A great majority of the archival records are made up of the records sold to Bulgaria in 1931 as scrap paper due to a great deal of neglect. This study informs about the Ottoman archival records sold to a paper factory near Sofia as scrap paper by İstanbul Financial Office in May 1931 and then placed in Bulgarian St Cyril Methodius National Library. In this context, this archive was firstly displayed in general St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Bulgaria; and the department of the National Library Rare Works, which serves within the body of the National Library. After that, the migration story of the Archive of Finance stretching from İstanbul to Sofia, which constitutes a large part of the archival records found in the Rare Works Department, and came here because of big chains of negligence. These developments experienced in this process are discussed in this study.
