Öğe Cancer Screening Attitudes of Nurses Working in Surgical and Internal Medicine Clinics: A Cross-Sectional Study(AVES, 2023) Ünver S.; Ersin C.; ÖZLEM İŞler N.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the current attitudes of nurses toward cancer screening. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study designed study was conducted with nurses working at the surgical and internal medicine clinics of a university hospital in Eastern Thrace of Türkiye and carried out adhering to the STROBE guidelines. The “Attitude Scale for Cancer Screening” and the “Demographic Information Form” were used for data collection. Results: Nurses have a positive attitude toward cancer screening. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed gender (? = 0.258, P= .006) and clinical experience (? = ?0.264, P= .005) as significantly associated with cancer screening attitude. A weak negative correlation was found between the cancer screening attitude score and clinical experience duration (r = ?0.232, P= .016). Being female, having a chronic disease, receiving cancer screening previously, and having limited clinical experience were the factors that positively affect nurses' attitudes toward cancer screening (P < .05). Conclusion: Having a chronic disease, receiving cancer screening previously, and having limited clinical experience improve the attitudes of nurses toward cancer screening. Male and experienced nurses need encouragement to attend cancer screening programs. For future studies, we suggest qualitative studies be conducted to examine the reasons for the negative attitudes and beliefs of nurses about cancer screening deeply. © 2023 AVES. Negative attitude scores of nurses who had no experience in providing care for older patients were statistically significantly higher than those who had experience (p <.05). There was a positive relationship between the mean age and professional experience of nurses and the mean attitude score (r =.18 p =.019; r =.17 p =.027, respectively). Conclusion: The study showed that nurses who worked in surgical units had a positive attitude toward older patients, and their educational status, the experiences they gained in providing care for older patients, and the increase in their age and professional experience were effective in developing their positive attitudes toward older patients. Material and Methods: A prospective, randomized controlled trial de-sign was conducted. Nine mothers in the study group were given printed informative brochures after a 15-minute oral informative session, whereas nine mothers in the control group were given only oral information. The effectiveness of these interventions was assessed at 15th and 90th days. Results: Mothers in both groups achieved significantly higher information and application level scores at 15th and 90th days when compared to their initial evaluation (p< 0.05). In the study group, 90 days after the informative session, the mothers achieved statistically higher information level scores than the mothers in the control group (U= 8.000, p= 0.019). Conclusion: Giving printed informative brochures is more effective than giving only oral information on mothers’ knowledge about preventing VP shunt infections. Printed informative brochures about preventing VP shunt infections could improve mothers’ level of knowledge in the long term and avoid shunt infections. © 2020 by Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunization Society.
